a single needle,a leap of faith
When we talk about feminism, we often focus on the active and overlook groups of women who are in desperate need of support—like widows from third-tier cities in China. Many of these women were born and raised before the founding of modern China and were taught to be the "ideal woman," dedicating their lives entirely to their families. While some may dismiss this as an outdated mindset, it becomes deeply harmful when viewed as the sole purpose of life.
No one considers what happens when these women lose their husbands or, even more devastatingly, their children. How do they navigate a world where their long-held purpose has been stripped away? These women were not raised to be independent or strong; the concept of empowerment or "girl power" is foreign to them. How can we help them rebuild their lives instead of just surviving? What resources and support can we offer? To address this, I created a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping these widows regain control of their lives and rediscover their sense of purpose. The organization is to redesign the traditional Chinese embroidery pattern and create new patterns with the existing symbols to deliver more positive messages, to Introduce terms (such as LGBTQ). Making embroidery can serve as a form of art therapy. It is also my grandma's only hobby. The project is Inspired by my grandma. 2021
